Prague sightseeing consist from more than 4 000 historical monuments and represent the largest urban historical center registered at the UNESCO heritage list. Below is the short list of sight spots which belongs to the category of “MUST to see”.
Prague sightseeing - Prague Castle and around
- Prague Castle - founded around 870 by the Premysl princes soon became a center for Bohemian lands. Since that time the complex of buildings and churches has been rebuilt many times. Today it is the largest ancient castle complex in the world (570 meters long and on average 128 meters wide). It is the seat of the Czech president and one of the most visited Prague sightseeing spot.
- St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle - (Chrám svatého Víta) is the spiritual heart of the nation, the mausoleum of Bohemian kings and the city’s greatest symbol. The construction of originally Gothic cathedral took from 1344 till 1929.
- Golden Lane (Zlatá ulička) - the most visited street in Prague with picturesque tiny houses originally built by for poor working people in the 16th century.
- Daliborka Tower - built in 1496 and used as a prison till the end of 18th century. It is named after its first prisoner Dalibor of Kozojedy. The prison is really terrifying.
Prague sightseeing - Old Town Square and around
- The Old Town Square – (Staroměstské náměstí) former medieval town's main market place and the center of all important historical events. Picturesque with its blend of architectural styles: Gothic, Renaissance, Baroqueand neo-styles. Today it is a center with constant 24 hour activity.
- Church of Our Lady before Tyn – (also called Týnský chrám) is a little bit separated form Old Town Square, but thanks to its impressive size and 12th century Gothic style majestically dominates the whole square. This church was dedicated to the people and became a center of the reforming Hussites in the 15th century.
- Old Town Hall & Astronomical Clock – (Staroměstský orloj) the Old Town Hall built in 1338 is a symbol of the town's self-governance. Contains Astronomical Clock where since 1490 every hour of the day between 8 am and 8 pm the twelve apostles appear in the tiny windows. Astronomical clocks are decorated with moving allegorical figures of Death, the Turk, the Miser, the Fool and the Rooster. Do not forget to climb, or take a lift to the observation deck in the tower. You will be awarded by an unforgettable view from this well known Prague sightseeing spot.
- Jewish Town - (Židovské město)The spiritual heart of the Jewish Town is the Old-new Synagogue built in the 13th century. Belongs to one of Prague's earliest Gothic structures. The Old Jewish Cemetery has the earliest tombstone dating back to 1439
Prague sightseeing - Charles Bridge and around
- Charles Bridge – (Karlův most) it connects the Old Town (Nové město) and the Little Quarter (Malá strana) is one of the world’s most beautiful bridges. The bridge was built in 1357, figures of saints were added later on during the 17th century. The bridge is crowded with tourist during the day. At night offers a wonderful views of the illuminated castle and Old Town.
- Old Town Bridge Tower – (Staromestská mostecká věž) built in 1357 in the same year as the Charles Bridge as a fortified bridge tower.
- Lesser Town – (Malá strana) The most romantic district at the foot of Prague Castle. During the medieval period a quarter of craftsman later on the place of living of nobles supporting the king. It is a place full of palaces, embassies, churches. Relatively quiet especially in the back narrow ancient streets.
- Lesser Town Square - (Malostranské náměstí) lively square with large Baroque and Renaissance palaces. Do not miss to take a rest in the famous 100-year-old "Malostranska kavarna".
- Church of St Nicholas – (Kostel svatého Mikuláše) a monumental 13th century baroque building in the middle of the Lesser Town Square. The former Jesuit college is the finest example of Bohemian Baroque.
Prague sightseeing - City center and around
- Powder Gate – (Prašná brána) a gothic tower dating back to the 15th century. It represented a starting point of traditional coronation path of Bohemian kings to the Castle. Today is used as a starting point of a very a popular tourist Royal Route leading through the Charles Bridge all the way up to the Prague Castle.
- Municipal House – (Obecní dům) a magnificent and stunning Art Nouveau style building dated back to 1905 served as a symbol of the new republic. It was a place where the newly independent state of Czechoslovakia was officially founded in 1918 and a place, where in 1989 communists and revolt leaders discussed the transformation to democracy.
- National Theatre - (Národní divadlo) the symbol of the 19-th century Czech nationalism. It took 20 years for the general public to collect the money for the construction. Just days before a “grand opening” it was destroyed by a fire.
- Vysehrad – a steep rocky hill symbolizing the birth of Czech nation and a place connected with many legend and myths founded probably in the middle of 10th century. Today you can find there the Church of St. Peter and Paul (1070), The National Cemetery the resting place of many most famous Czech writers and composers, including Jan Neruda, Bedřich Smetana and Antonín Dvořák, Rotunda of St Martin - the oldest complete Romanesque building in Prague dating back to the 11th century.
