in the Prague and Czech history

During the whole history of the Czech Republic and Prague years ending with the number 8 frequently brought memorable events. Not all of them positive...

  • 658 - Samo, the head of first state formation at our territory dies. His empire starts melting.

  • 1108 - Premysl clan massacres the clan of Vrsoves and gains control over the territory.

  • 1278 - Premysl Otakar II. the "King of Gold and Iron" is killed in the battle at Moravian fields.

  • 1338 - The construction of Old Town Hall starts.

  • 1348 - Charles University and Karlstejn castle are founded.

  • 1378 - King Charles IV. dies.

  • 1458 - Jiri from Podebrady is crowned King of Bohemia.

  • 1618 - So called "Second Praha Defenestration". The Thirty Years War starts.

  • 1648 - Siege of the capital city by the Swedish army. The end of Thirty Years War.

  • 1718 - The State Technical Library is founded.

  • 1818 - The National Museum is founded.

  • 1848 - The Revolutionary Year. Growing national and Slavonic consciousness. Suppression of Praha revolt.

  • 1868 - The construction of The National Theater starts.

  • 1888 - The first power plant put into operation by F. Krizik.

  • 1898 - The first electric tram line in Praha. Beginning of the Czech cinematography.

  • 1918 - Czechoslovakia is established, Tomas Garrique Masaryk becomes President.

  • 1938 - Munich Treaty and German occupation of the Czech and Moravia border region.

  • 1948 - The Communist Party takes power in Czechoslovakia.

  • 1968 - So called Prague Spring. Invasion of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact armies.

  • 1978 - Vladimir Remek the first non-Soviet, non-US man in space.

  • 1998 - Czech ice hokey team wins Gold medals at Winter Olympic games in Nagano, Japan.
